2/25/2004 | Armed Burglary Suspects in Custody
(PLEASANT PRAIRIE, WI) Pleasant Prairie Police Officers were called to the area of 115th Street and 1st Avenue late Wednesday morning by an alert Pleasant Prairie resident who called to report suspicious activity in the area of her home.

According to Pleasant Prairie Police Chief Brian Wagner, the resident observed a car drop off three men in the area and then leave after first hitting a mailbox. The three men who were dropped off were observed jumping a fence nearby and they then disappeared into a wooded area near some homes.

Officers responding to the call located the vehicle driving in the area and took the lone operator, Bruce W. Franklin Jr, 18 of 4940 42nd Avenue, Kenosha into custody. Police then began checking homes in the area where the three men were last seen on foot. Officers discovered an entry to the residence at 11441 1st Avenue and surrounded that home. Police then entered after their was no response to repeated warnings to exit the house. Inside, officers found the two juveniles and one adult male, Isaias E. Mares of 5428 24th Avenue, Kenosha hiding in the garage. One of the juveniles and the adult were found to be armed with loaded handguns apparently stolen from the house and all were in possession of various other stolen property from the residence and were taken into custody without further incident.

The two juveniles ages 15 & 16, both of Kenosha, were held at the Racine Juvenile Detention Center on charges of being party to a crime of burglary while armed. Both Franklin and Mares are being held in the Kenosha County Jail on the same charges and are expected to appear in Kenosha County Circuit Court either Thursday or Friday. Police are working with the home owner to determine the value of the items stolen from the residence and the investigation is continuing.

We are fortunate that the initial activity was observed and that the neighbor who saw it thought to call us. That enabled us to quickly resolve this crime and also to keep several firearms off the streets where they could have been used to hurt someone." Wagner said. "This is just one more example of the value of the great working relationship that we enjoy with our residents", he said.
