The Chiwaukee Prairie, A Natural Treasure
Protection and Preservation Efforts
The Land Use Plan set forth guidelines, recommendations and strategies for land acquisitions by public and private agencies in the Chiwaukee Prairie.
Organizations like The Nature Conservancy of Wisconsin, The Chiwaukee Prairie Preservation Fund, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Kenosha County, and the Village of Pleasant Prairie have been acquiring hundred of acres of land for the preservation of the prairie.
The Conservancy volunteer groups and the Wisconsin DNR have been working together to raise funds, remove invasive plants, document plants, collect seeds, and broadcast seeds to restore areas. Controlled burns and debrushing activities are also conducted on a yearly basis to maintain the prairie.
